Weshall now have a close look at some aspects ofidiomatic expressions. An significant point which has to be underlined is that idioms are not only colloquial words, as plenty of people believe. They can be found in formal style and in colloquial speech. They can appear in verse or in the masterpieces of Shakespeare and the Bible.

What, then, is an idiom? One can say that an idiom is a collocation of words which, taken in the same place, mean something different from the separate phrases of the idiom when they are placed alone. The way in which the words are put together is sometimes funny, illogical or even grammatically incorrect. These are the individual features of some idiomatic expressions. Other idioms are totally common and reasonable in their grammatical aspects and vocabulary. Due to the special features of some idioms, we shall study the idiom in general and we occasionally fail to change any part of it (except perhaps, only the grammatical form of the verb).
English is very rich in idiomatic expressions. In fact, it is difficult to speak or write English language without using idioms. An English native speaker is very often not aware that he is using an idiom; perhaps he does not even realize that an idiom which he implements is grammatically incorrect. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main goals, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically incorrect causes him trouble. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It cannot be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of phrases. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is often seen from the vocabulary.
